Beading for hope
Many young people have aspirations to serve the world in one way or another, but for some, those aspirations take on a more immediate pace.
Alia Whitney-Johnson, an MIT student, has had a lifelong passion for creating jewelry from beads. One summer, as she worked in Sri Lanka, she realized that her passion could be put to good use to empower the women of the area after the tsunami. The women she met were very interested in beading also, and because of that, Alia has started a charity that will empower the women to raise enough money to open a coop for abused women and children.
With the help of many people and organizations, her goal is well within sight. Everyone can make a difference, great or small. This college student has shown how anyone can do this.
